At the end of the settlement date of January 31, 2008, short interest in 2,707 NASDAQ Global Market (sm) securities totaled 8,441,146,548 shares compared with 8,493,175,740 shares in 2,707 Global Market issues reported for the prior settlement date of January 15, 2008. The end-of-January short interest represents 2.94 days average daily NASDAQ Global Market share volume for the reporting period, compared with 4.49 days for the prior reporting period.

Short interest in 516 securities on The NASDAQ Capital Market(sm) totaled 184,756,264 shares at the end of the settlement date of January 31, 2008, compared with 192,878,209 shares in 507 securities for the previous reporting period. This represents 4.02 days average daily volume, compared with the previous reporting period's figure of 3.13.

In summary, short interest in all 3,223 NASDAQ(r) securities totaled 8,625,902,812 shares at the end of the January 31, 2008 settlement date, compared with 3,223 issues and 8,686,053,949 shares at the end of the previous reporting period. This is 2.96 days average daily volume, compared with an average of 4.45 days for the previous reporting period.

The open short interest positions reported for each NASDAQ security reflect the total number of shares sold short by all broker/dealers regardless of their exchange affiliations. Consolidated volume in all U.S. securities last year was a record 1.52 trillion, compared with 1.21 trillion the previous year. NASDAQ's matched market share of all U.S. Equity share volume was more than any other U.S. exchange at 29.1% in 2007, compared to 27.3% in 2006.

NASDAQ's matched volume in all U.S. securities in December 2007 was 34.0 billion shares, an increase from 25.5 billion in December 2006. NASDAQ's matched market share of all U.S. Equity share volume was 29.0% in December, more than any other U.S. exchange for the ninth consecutive month.

In 2007, NASDAQ's matched volume in NASDAQ-listed securities was 250.8 billion shares, compared to 244.8 billion shares the previous year. NASDAQ's handled market share in NASDAQ-listed securities in 2007 was 75.7%(1) and matched market share was 46.1%.

During December 2007, NASDAQ's matched volume in NASDAQ-listed securities was 17.3 billion shares, compared to 17.0 billion shares in December 2006. NASDAQ's handled market share in NASDAQ-listed securities in December was 73.2%(2) and matched market share in was 45.4%.

NASDAQ's matched volume in NYSE-listed stocks in 2007 was a record high 142.3 billion shares, an increase from 64.5 billion shares in 2006. NASDAQ's total reported market share in NYSE-listed stocks was a record 35.1%(3), compared with 25.8% the previous year. NASDAQ's matched market share in NYSE-listed securities in 2007 was a record high 17.1%, up from 10.4% in 2006. NASDAQ's handled market share in NYSE-listed securities was a record 54.2% in 2007, compared with 39.6% in 2006.

NASDAQ's matched volume in NYSE-listed stocks was 11.8 billion shares in December, an increase from 6.9 billion shares in December 2006. NASDAQ's total reported market share in NYSE-listed stocks in December was 36.7%(5). NASDAQ's matched market share in NYSE-listed securities last month was 18.3%, up from 14.2% in December 2006. NASDAQ's handled market share in NYSE-listed securities last month was 53.9%.
